Callendar House is a baronial mansion located a short distance from the town of Falkirk. The house has been owned by many Scottish families including the Earls of Callendar. Over the centuries it has played a part in the history of Scotland, having played host to Mary, Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Its last private owners were the Forbes family.
Callendar House uses costumed players to bring the history of the house to life. The kitchen, which dates from 1825, is the centre of this interactive display and visitors can watch the kitchen staff go about their work, hear stories about life below stairs and sample food from Georgian times. From time to time there are costumed displays of early 19th century clock making, shopkeeping and printing. It is best to contact the house before visiting for up to date details of these displays. All the exhibitions and displays are free, as is entry to the house.
