Despite what the name of the cafe may suggest, the S&M cafe is all about Sausage and Mash. Its first store was opened in 2002 on Portabello Road and since then new branches have opened up in Islington, Spitalfields, Smithfield Market, Leadenhall Market and, most recently the O2 arena in Greenwich.
The S&M Cafe aims to serve British food that is both affordable and sustainable. There is also a design element to the cafes as the owner has set out to create a physical environment that is influenced by the traditional British cafe. The cafe on Portabello Road used to be a greasy spoon and retains elements from its history, while the Islington branch maintains many of the trappings of the Italianate cafe that it used to be: art deco facade with vitrolette sign and steel edged laminated tables. The menu, as one might expect, is all about sausage and mash. There are a large number of sausages on the menu – with classics like pork & leek and pork & real ale, a large range of vegetarian sausages including tomato, basil and mozzarella, spinach & cheddar and Caerphilly cheese and leek, as well as a number of gluten free sausages. There is also a selection of specials with more exotic sausages influenced by India and Asia appearing on the menu.
