Swanage

The pretty town of Swanage in Dorset occupies what must be one of the best locations in the country, being right on the coast in this very beautiful county. Once a thriving fishing port, Swanage now draws most of its income from tourism, and a visit is enough to see why. Added interest comes from the famous Purbeck Marble, a once very popular and highly regarded building stone that was quarried in the area, and many buildings in London can be seen faced with this beautiful stone.

However, it is the beautiful bay and beaches that bring people to Swanage in their thousands in the high summer season, and the town offers much in the way of accommodation, shops, and has a number of quaint traditional pubs in which to relax.

 

Swanage is also home to successful music festivals that focus on Jazz and Blues, and easy to reach from the nearby M27 motorway. Nearby Poole offers excellent shopping and a thriving nightlife for those looking for more than the usual seaside entertainment.

Encompassing 280 acres of sea cliffs, coastal downland and hay meadows; Durlston Country Park provides stunning views, walking trails and fascinating wildlife.

Highlights include the ‘Great Globe’; a 40,000kgs sphere of Portland limestone that was crafted in the 19th Century by George Burt; an eminent Victorian who also left a number of other artefacts around the park.
