The Lowry building is situated in a waterside location in the redeveloped Salford Quays in Greater Manchester. The building is named in honour of the famous Manchester artist L S Lowry, most known for his “matchstick men” paintings. The building itself can almost be considered a work of art as it has either won or been shortlisted for more than 30 awards.
The Lowry has gathered together the largest collection of works by L S Lowry in the world. There are 400 works in various media including oil paintings, watercolours, pastels and drawings. Most subjects are depicted, from the iconic industrial scenes to portraits, seascapes and landscapes. Of special interest to visitors there is a self portrait and portraits of his parents which he kept in his own collection.
This important collection was begun in the 1930s by Salford Museum and Art Gallery and transferred to its new home in The Lowry in 2000.
