The small Surrey town of Weybridge lays claim to some interesting historical firsts, and holds a place in the history of aviation and motoring in Britain that are often overlooked.
The nearby Brooklands Motor Circuit – now owned by Mercedes Benz – was the first of its type when it opened in 1907, and also acted as an airfield where great aviation pioneers such as AV Roe, Vickers and Sopwith had their headquarters and flew ground breaking prototypes. The town itself was a small village until the railways opened up access, and notable are the many older buildings that still populate what is a thriving town.
