Wolverhampton

The city of Wolverhampton is situated in the midlands and, with a population of around quarter of a million inhabitants, is among the top fifteen most populated cities in England.
Mostly modern in construction, Wolverhampton does have a degree of charm, but it remains a largely industrial town that has its roots firmly in the mining and manufacturing industries. Indeed, Britain’s motor manufacturing industry featured strongly in the city’s history, but alas is no more. With excellent road links from the nearby M6 and a major railway station in the city, Wolverhampton is a thriving centre of commerce, yet it may surprise many to find that Wolverhampton Art Gallery is among the most highly regarded outside of London, particularly in respect of its comprehensive and unmatched ‘Pop Art’ collection.

Many other excellent galleries, museums and arts centres in the city help to give Wolverhampton a standing in the arts world that is not recognised by the public as it should be.

Opened in 1884, the Wolverhampton Art Gallery houses a fine collection of contemporary and historic paintings and sculptures.

Spread across nine galleries that include Georgian, Victorian and Pop Art rooms, the Wolverhampton Art Gallery has won numerous awards, including The Guardian’s Family Friendly Museum Award, thanks to its many hands-on, interactive initiatives.
