This 76-mile wall, constructed on the orders of the Emperor Hadrian, stretched from Carlisle on the west coast, to the Tyne in the east, “To separate the Romans from the barbarians”.

It is possible to walk the entire length of the wall, following a well-worn tourist trail. Maps are readily available giving you details of the many milecastles, forts, and other points of interest along the way.
There is a bus service – which with true British irony has the number AD122, the year Hadrian ordered the wall built – that travels the full length of the route. |
