The Lake District

Promoted as the most beautiful area in England , it would be hard to find anywhere that could legitimately dispute that claim. The Lake District occupies the extreme north-western corner of England, and is home to sixteen principal lakes nestled between the high peaks of the Cumbrian mountains . Waterfalls cascade down huge drops, picture-postcard villages hug the banks of the lakes, and hundreds of miles of dry stone walls line the twisting narrow roads.

In the south, Coniston and Windermere are most popular lakes, with the villages of Bowness and Ambleside vying for the adulation of the tourists. Bowness is home to the Beatrix Potter Experience, one of the best attractions for adults and children alike. Steamers link the various towns around the shore, and give a different perspective on the ever changing landscape.

Of the northern lakes Derwent Water, Brassenthwaite Lake , and Ullswater, all have a captivating beauty.

The Lake District is England 's largest National Park, which affords it much protection from development, and maintains the natural surroundings. It is a haven for ramblers and climbers, but be aware the weather is unpredictable and volatile. Make sure you always take adequate supplies, suitable clothing, and let someone know your plans.
