Built around 4,500 years ago, Stonehenge is still an enigma for scientists, historians, and just about everyone who visits. In truth, nobody knows why or by whom it was built, although there are ample theories.
Today, the busy A303 runs close by, a modern visitor centre and large car park are across the road, and the stones themselves are fenced off to preserve them from their own popularity. It is difficult therefore to get a real feel for the awesome achievement it must have been to construct such a thing in those primitive times.
